Incidental Yarns

Not all who wander are lost. Some are just looking for more yarn.

Corfe Castle (Portland / Weymouth, England)

We made it to England, home of picturesque ruins and King Charles. There was no King Charles on this trip, but we did pass through Weymouth on our way to the castle, and there is a lot of George III about – he is credited with making Weymouth the popular seaside resort it is today.

Corfe Castle, the point of our off-ship excursion, is one of the most photographed ruins in the UK, and it’s easy to see why.

You can’t walk 10 feet without coming across another viewpoint…

FYI, this is what happens when you let Parlimentarians in your gates…

The castle was blown up – yes, the explosives and gunpowder kind of blown up – by an act of Parliment in the 1600’s to prevent it from being used as a Royalist stronghold.

England is already a day behind us, today we are moored in Bilboa, Spain. I had intended to disembark and explore the Guggenhiem, among other things, but I have fallen victim to the vacation cold, and am sneezing and coughing and altogether too ill to be out and about. The medical team on board has assessed me and as I do not have covid, I have not been restricted to quarters. But honestly, I’m ready for another nap every 4 hours and not overly interested in walking great distances. So I’ve installed myself by a window where I can see the city and watch the water move, and that’s enough sightseeing for today.

Tomorrow, we will be in A Coruna (still Spain) and hopefully I will have my tourist curiosity back.

But for now, it’s time for a nap. Hope my roomie is ready for me to come back…
